What are good tie dye clothes?
Most dye kits recommend using natural fibers like cotton, wool, silk, or rayon. Below, we recommend sweatshirts, sweatpants, and t-shirts that will work with most dyes.
Can you tie dye with regular clothes?
Though you can use a variety of dyes to do tie-dye, our recommended and most popular is the Dharma Fiber Reactive Procion type Dye for all cotton, rayon, hemp and other plant fibers. If you want to tie dye silk, you can use these products or any silk dye or paint that we carry.

Do you tie-dye wet or dry?
We generally recommend washing your fabric and leaving it damp before tie-dyeing, as the dye has an easier time saturating the fabric when it’s wet. But depending on the technique and the look you want, you can apply dye to dry fabric. Just make sure the fabric has been washed (if it’s new) to remove the sizing.
How long should I let my tie-dye sit?
If using Tulip One-Step Dye, let your items sit for 8-24 hours to absorb the dye. The longer your dye sits, the more intense the color will turn out. If using a different dye, follow the length of time indicated on your dye instructions.
Do you mix tie-dye with hot or cold water?
You should add lukewarm water to your bottles when preparing your dye solutions. Adding water that’s too cold can make it hard for the dye powder to dissolve. Adding water that’s too hot can make the dye react with the water, exhausting the dye before it reaches the fabric.
